ALEC DANKWORTH

SPANISH ACCENTS

Alec Dankworth’s long-standing love of all things Spanish provided the inspiration for this album. Metheny, Corea, even Rodrigo are reinvented alongside traditional folk songs and originals in flamenco rhythms creating a wonderful and genuinely Spanish world. A heady mix of top British players - guitarist Phil Robson, saxophonist Julian Arguelles, Chris Garrick’s gorgeous violin, and Alec Dankworth’s bass interweaving with the genuinely Spanish drumwork of Barcelona-based Marc Miralta make this an unusual line-up. Added to this is some intriguing drone-work from French bagpipe expert Jean-Pierre Rasle. Three tracks include singing from the youngest member of the Dankworth dynasty, Emily, as well as the great Cleo Laine. The album launch party will be on Tuesday 8th July at St Cyprian’s Church in Marylebone at 6.30 p.m.

This stunning album demonstrates Gwilym’s remarkable strengths as composer, his extraordinary abilities on the piano and showcases the two main ensembles he has developed with some of the UK’s finest musicians. Produced by Jason Yarde (twice Mercury nominated), and featuring the great saxophonist Stan Sulzmann, leading guitarist John Parricelli, and the outstanding rhythm section of bassist Phil Donkin, drummer Martin France, percussionist Ben Bryant, Perception was launched at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on 16th November with Gwilym’s sextet playing support to jazz legend Charlie Haden on the opening night of the 2007 London Jazz Festival.

PAUL BOOTH

NO LOOKING BACK

Paul Booth - No Looking Back 2007 is an exciting year for Paul Booth. This year the Paul Booth Quintet are on tour with their new album, and Paul is also touring with rock legend Steve Winwood, Arnie Somogyi’s Ambulance, Tim Garland’s Northern Underground Orchestra and Derek Nash's Sax Appeal. Paul’s second album No Looking Back showcases Paul’s modern melodic sensibilities with intricate rhythms across a number of original compositions. The solid rhythm section underpins some frantic improvisation and there is a real sense of interplay.

TIM LAPTHORN

SEVENTH SENSE

Chris Laurence's New View In the wake of his successful album “Natural Language” (Basho Records SRCD 9-2) Tim returns with a sparkling set of material featuring Arnie Somogyi (bass) and Stephen Keogh (drums). Seventh Sense puts the emphasis squarely back on the art of heartfelt improvisation and storytelling. The idea of the recording was to approach a number of new unrehearsed tunes with a clean slate and to see what happened. Most the tracks are first takes and there is virtually no editing, giving the music a very natural joyous feeling.

IAIN BALLAMY

MORE JAZZ

Iain Ballamy's Anorak More Jazz I’ve not heard Anorak live, but this album makes me want to rectify this oversight right away. This robust, yet thoughtful album sees Ballamy taking on the jazz mainstream on his own terms. It is an affectionate love letter to the jazz styles of the 1950s and 1960s which drew him into jazz, but refracted and gently distorted through the prism of his wide musical experiences (which would take several pages of closely written A4 to describe). Stuart Nicholson, Jazzwise 4 stars****

CHRIS LAURENCE

NEW VIEW

Chris Laurence's New View Chris Laurence has been the driving force behind many projects across all musical styles – classical, jazz, rock and film music. Despite his vast experience and huge reputation, Chris has never released an album under his own name. His album New View (Basho Records SRCD 18-2) features long time collaborators Frank Ricotti on vibraphone, John Parricelli on guitar, Martin France on drums and very special guest singer Norma Winstone. The compositions on the album are all by musicians Chris has worked with over the years including Steve Swallow, Joni Mitchell, John Surman & Kenny Wheeler.

"a superb album, initially easy on the ear, yet revealing fresh subtleties each time it's played" Chris Parker

MARK LOCKHEART

MOVING AIR

Mark Lockheart - Moving Air

"Were Lockheart living in New York, he’d likely be a part of the circle that includes saxophonists David Binney, Chris Potter and guitarist Adam Rogers. That's recommendation enough for jazz fans outside the UK to step beyond their own defined circles and check out a player as contemporary and significant as any of his American counterparts" AllAboutJazz.com

LIAM NOBLE

ROMANCE AMONG THE FISHES

Romance Among the Fishes - Liam Noble

'The sharp-end American bass/drums duo of New York downtowners Drew Gress and Tom Rainey were mixed into another cocktail on Monday, playing the music of the British pianist Liam Noble, with Phil Robson on guitar...the percussively algebraic finale Jitters brought inventive collective jittering of a clarity, focus and density that sounded like the music of regular partners'.
